Strong start to the new year but it has been an odd last 3 months with so many layoffs at large companies and rumors of many more to come.  Great thing for small, mid-sized & start-up firms because they're hiring at a nice pace.  Cloud, JavaScript and Data related hiring is driving the market.  Call or email me and I can go into more detail or possibly answer your local market questions.

As for mid to senior level management jobs, seems like a sluggish start in the new year. I've seen 9 new CIOs named across Tampa Bay region this year (at firms $50m and up).  6 of the new CIOs are at Healthcare related Firms.  Anyone have an opinion on this?  The trend for the last couple of years is for senior level people to move out of town or take on out of town contracts at solid rates.

 

Just a random thought:

I worked on 4 CIO searches last year and some common thoughts were shared by the many executives I interviewed.  Common themes:

Try to leave the firm better than when you joined.  Remember, the company will be around after you've gone on to your next venture.

Focus on the Business, how they make money, competitive challenges and how to leverage technology to compete & drive revenue growth. Focus on relationships with business leaders of the main or most profitable business units.

To drive growth, it is about process & process improvement. Fix your team and then align yourself with the business to help them.  Examples - work with CFO to reduce DSO or improve Cash to Cash processes.  Work with Marketing to develop better analytics tools - all the data goes through your system.

Focus on your team, challenge them but don't support them to the point they could fail. Spoke to one CIO who has promoted many people and helped guide the carers to the point that 20 former direct reports earn Corporate or Division CIO title. At all the firms he has been CIO, the replacement was always internal. I noticed several local CIO replacements last year were from internal promotions.

When I started my Firm, the first placement was a CIO with a $350k+ package.  The highest total package for a C-level executive I've secured an offer was at $350k base salary with well designed 100% on target bonus and a stretch goal for 200%.
